Team Greece, represented by Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari, triumphed over team Switzerland at the Hopman Cup, in a match that took place in Perth, Australia on Thursday afternoon local time.

The team of Sakkari and Tsitsipas won by a score of 4-3, 2-4, 4-3, trouncing the formidable Swiss team of Bencic and Federer in a match which lasted for one hour and seven minutes.

The two young Greek tennis players became the first team to beat the Swiss since 2017, when Federer and Bencic lost a doubles match in France.

After the match, Sakkari expressed amazement at her team’s triumph, saying ”I really don’t know how I made it,” adding that she was extremely happy that she managed to return two of Federer’s serves. Her deep respect for the Swiss tennis legend was clear.

Tsitsipas also expressed pleasure, and a perhaps a bit of incredulity, at his team’s efforts. He told interviewers after the match,”if you would have told me that we would have two wins in the groups, beating such a great country like Switzerland, I would tell you that you’re a liar”.

Sakkari and Tsitsipas thanked all the Greeks and Greek-Australians who cheered them steadily during their matches, saying they felt as if they were back home.

With this amazing performance, Greece managed to finish second in its group, topping teams from the United States and Great Britain. Switzerland finished first overall, which paves the way to the competition final, which will take place on Saturday.
