Athens Environs Still Shrouded in Snow

Foothills of Mt. Parnitha shrouded in snow

Suburbs encircling the city of Athens remain shrouded in snow from the Christmas Day storms, and scenic Mount Parnitha on the outskirts of the Greek capital remains covered in many inches of snow. Temperatures still remain low; however, in a great disappointment to snow lovers, there was no sign of a White Christmas inside the capital city itself.
Attica’s largest mountain, a popular destination for nature lovers — and gamblers because of the casino on Parnitha — can only be accessed by vehicles using snow tires, according to warnings issued by the Attica Police.
Heavy snowfall in many parts of Greece contributed to a truly White Christmas this year. In several area vehicles can only travel with snow tires. Fortunately, no major traffic accidents were reported by press time.
Access to many mountainous areas across Greece is difficult currently, with police advising travelers to avoid driving on treacherous roads until the snow has had a chance to melt.
