According to data published by FedHATTA, the Federation of the Hellenic Associations of Tourist and Travel Agencies, the number of Greeks who choose a destination abroad instead of Greece for their Christmas vacations is booming again, following a significant decline during the years of the financial crisis.
Both the fact that the prices of hotels in Greek winter destinations have risen, and that most of them are already full during Christmas, leads many Greeks to the decision to visit destinations abroad to celebrate Christmas.
Value-for-money destinations are the most popular among Greeks, as they do not necessarily choose cheap destinations but those that combine the high quality of their services with their price.
Traditional winter destinations such as Vienna, London, cities in Switzerland, Germany, and Scandinavia have seen a significant increase in the number of Greeks who choose them in December and January. Destinations in Asia, Africa, and Latin America have also seen a significant uptick in holiday-time visits.
According to FedHATTA data, traditional Christmas destinations in Europe recorded an increase of 20 percent among Greek travelers in 2018, with Asian and African destinations, such as Dubai, Egypt, Morocco, and Jordan seeing an increase of approximately 30 percent.
