On Sunday morning, diplomats from Nicosia refuted Turkey’s claims that a joint military exercise took place south of Cyprus between the American and the Turkish armies earlier this week.
According to the Cypriot state TV RIK, diplomats from Nicosia said the American and the French military presence in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone is clear and the two countries had joint exercises following an authorization issued by the Cypriot State.
Turkey had conducted its own separate exercises, but not with the American military.
Cyprus believes Turkey has tried to provoke tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean following Cyprus’ efforts to tap into its natural resources inside the Republic’s EEZ.
