Cyprus Hails New US Approach to Bilateral Relations

”It is important that the USΑ no longer approaches the Republic of Cyprus on the basis of developments in the Cyprus issue or their relations with Turkey”, Cypriot Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides said on Sunday.
He noted that this is the first time that the US has sent a clear message regarding the Republic of Cyprus’ exercise of its sovereign rights over the its Exclusive Economic Zone.
Christodoulides was invited to comment on Wess Mitchell’s recent interview by Greek newspaper Kathimerini in Cyprus. Mitchell serves as the current U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs.
Mitchell`s statements are indicative of how the USA views their bilateral relations with Cyprus, the Foreign Minister noted.
Mitchell has said that the American ”line has been consistent. Cyprus is a sovereign country, and just like any other sovereign country it has resources and can develop those resources”.
Turkish attempts to undermine Cyprus’ rights in its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) occur on a regular basis, and tensions have recently been quite high in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
