EU Urges Turkey To Stop Threatening Sovereignty of Member States

Turkey should steer clear of actions which threaten the sovereignty of European Union member states, including the right to explore and exploit their natural resources, according to the European Commission.
The commission made the official statement in reply to a parliamentary question posed by three Cypriot Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), state-run news agency CNA reports.
Lefteris Christoforou from the European People’s Party, Demetris Papadakis from the Socialists and Democrats and Neoklis Sylikiotis from the European Left, together handed a written question regarding the harassment of Cypriot fishing boats by Turkey, asking how the European Commission would intervene to stop these practices against a member state.
The MEP’s stressed that Turkey has repeatedly hampered the free movement of Cypriot fishing vessels off the coast of the island, and that as a result of this “unacceptable behavior” the fishing fleet in Cyprus has been reduced. The MEP’s claim that the situation has become so untenable that Cypriot fishing “is in danger of extinction.”
During his speech in the European Parliament, Christoforou, representing the European People’s Party, said ”the Cypriot citizens ask the European Union to protect and secure their safety from the Turkish threats”.
