Former Greek Prime Minister and President of the Socialist International, George Papandreou, along with Greek Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos and MEP Dimitris Papadimoulis, have co-signed an open letter to British Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn.
The letter to the British newspaper The Guardian urges the Labour Party leader to revoke article 50 and reverse Brexit immediately.
Signed by 69 deputies and members of the European Parliament, along with several other individuals, the letter expresses the signatories’ belief in a united Europe. It strongly urges Corbyn “to work with us for the future of our continent” by spearheading EU reforms.
The writers of the appeal say they have “deep misgivings about the dominant institutions of the European Union, and what they have become over the past three decades”. They cite the trend of rising fascism in Europe, the prevailing of corporate interests and favoring austerity over the rights of citizens as major areas of concern.
They also expressed worries about climate change and the drowning deaths of migrants in the Mediterranean.
In regard to a united Europe, they stated “we are not ready to surrender this once-great project to those who would subvert it. To do so would betray its creators, whose values we cherish.”
Concluding their brief appeal to Corbyn, Papandreou, Tsacalotos and Papadimoulis asked Corbyn that the decision to trigger article 50 be revoked, in light of the recent opinion from the advocate general to the European Court of Justice.
They added that they want to “allow the people’s voice to be heard before Brexit becomes irreversible” despite the fact that Brexit was passed by referendum vote in the UK.
