Germany’s Christian Democratic Union on Friday elected Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer as the successor to Chancellor Angela Merkel in the conservative party leadership.
Kramp-Karrenbauer, 56, former interior minister and governor of Saarland, won with a slight majority of 51.7 percent, with 517 of the 999 votes cast, beating out 63-year-old executive Friedrich Merz.
After the CDU failed to win in regional elections in its stronghold of Hesse, losing more than 11 percentage points, the German Chancellor announced her resignation as party leader. She told supporters that she will not run after her term ends in 2021.
A close ally to Merkel, Kramp-Karrenbauer is expected to keep the party going in its current center-right direction, as opposed to Merz who wanted to take the party to its more conservative roots, as German analysts have noted.
