Lanthimos’ “The Favourite” Scoops Awards at British Independent Film Awards

Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos won Best Director for his film “The Favourite”, which scooped a record ten honors at the 21st annual British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) on Sunday.

Olivia Colman, who stars as the film’s moody, dissipated Queen Anne, won for Best Actress, while co-star Rachel Weisz was named Best Supporting Actress.

In addition to those accolades, the film snagged five craft awards, making “The Favourite”  by far the BIFA’s most-decorated film of the year. They included nods for Best Casting, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Make-Up & Hair Design and Best Production Design.

“The Favourite” is considered an “historical period comedy-drama”. The film was released in 2018 and the screenplay was written by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara.

The project was a co-production of filmmakers from Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States. Its story focuses on the behind-the-scenes politics between two cousins jockeying to be court favourites during the reign of Queen Anne in the early 18th century.
