Over one in three schools in Central Macedonia are currently being occupied by students protesting the recent Prespa Agreement made between Greece and FYROM which decided the Balkan country’s name.
According to the Greek Ministry of Education, 35 percent of schools in northern and central Greece are currently being occupied by protesting students. They are expressing their deep disapproval of the Greek government’s agreement with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia by occupying 210 junior high, high schools and vocational schools.
Currently, 13.9 percent of all schools nationwide are under occupation by the students. In Larissa, in central Greece, the number of schools under student occupation is continuing to increase. Twelve high school buildings in Larissa Prefecture are now bedecked in Greek flags placed there by student protestors.
In neighboring Magnesia Prefecture the situation is calming down, with only four high schools currently being occupied as opposed to a high of fifteen on Thursday.
According to the Education Ministry, the classes the students are missing during the protest must be taken at a later time.
Education officials will consider eliminating school excursions and perhaps school holidays, with the final decision belonging to the individual school boards.
