The daily commute for thousands of Athenians was disrupted on Wednesday morning due to a 24-hour nationwide general strike. The labor action was called by the General Confederation of Employees of Greece (GSEE), Greece’s largest union for private-sector workers.
Metro, trolley, trains and trams are completely out of operation in Athens, with buses only operating from 9 o’clock in the morning until 9 o’clock in the evening.

Busy streets like Kifissou Avenue, as well as Petrou Ralli, Katechaki, Vasilissis Sofias, Vasilissis Amalias, Vasileos Konstantinou and Syggrou are jammed with traffic. Vehicles have been bumper-to-bumper for hours.
The GSEE union is also organizing a rally in Klafthmonos Square in central Athens at 11:00 on Wednesday morning, urging workers, the unemployed and pensioners to take part.
Among its demands are an end to excessive taxation, a minimum wage of €751 ($848) per month (the same amount before the fiscal crisis), and collective labor agreements. The GSEE also calls for a fair and viable social insurance system without cuts to benefits and pensions.
