Violent clashes erupted on the streets of central Athens right after the conclusion of the annual march commemorating the 1973 Polytechnic uprising against the military junta that ruled Greece from 1967 until 1974.
Despite more than 5,000 police officers being deployed across Athens, the clashes were not prevented.

Tens of protesters, thought to be anarchists, launched a barrage of petrol bomb attacks and threw rocks at the police officers who were outside of the Hellenic Police HQ in Alexandras Avenue as well as at the Exarcheia area in the city center. The police responded with wide use of tear gas and arrested at least five of them, while two are believed to have been hurt.

The clashes, later in the night, were widespread both inside and outside of the Polytechnic campus, with petrol bombs and rocks being thrown against the police and the latter responding with tear gas.
