Fifteen statues created by the Chinese artist Xu Hongfei will be installed at Pier I of the port of Thessaloniki between December 17 and December 24 as part of Culture Week and a worldwide exhibition of the artist’s sculpture, which will begin in Thessaloniki.
The initiative for organizing Culture Week was undertaken by the Union of Chinese Traders in Greece.
The artist, along with the mayor of Guangzhou city — the second largest city in the world with a population of more than 26.5 million residents — will visit Thessaloniki during the week of the installation.
Xu Hongfei is the president of the sculpture academy in Guangzhou. He has exhibited his works in Australia, the United States, Italy, France, Germany, Turkey, Peru and Colombia. The most representative element of his work is his exploration of the female figure.
The opening ceremony of Culture Week has been scheduled for December 18 and is expected to be attended by Central Macedonia’s Regional Governor Apostolos Tzitzikostas and Mayor Giannis Boutaris.
The objective of the exhibit is to present Thessaloniki and Guangzhou to the world, employing a combination of Chinese art with the unique beauty of Greek civilization, in order to enhance communication and cooperation between the two cities.
At present the Chinese population in Thessaloniki is estimated to be approximately 2,300.
