Marathon Mayor Dedicates 36th Race to Victims of Attica Wildfires

The 36th Authentic Marathon was held on Sunday morning in the town of Marathon, Greece, with Mayor Elias Psinakis dedicating this year’s race to the 99 victims of July’s East Attica wildfires.
“This year’s marathon is very special to us after the tragedy with the fires in Mati,” said the Marathon mayor in his address to the athletes participating in the marathon on race day. “I would ask you to please dedicate it to the memory of the 99 dead, and hold one minute’s silence in their memory,” he added. The mayor’s speech caused a wave of emotion to sweep over the race participants and the crowd.
Mati is adjacent to the city of Marathon and the Authentic Marathon route goes directly through Mati.
Deadly fires swept over Mati in July, causing the deaths of 99 people and the destruction of an unprecedented amount of property and infrastructure.
