Greek Embassy in US Invites Children to "Become an Archaeologist"

The Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens

The Greek Embassy in Washington on Saturday opened its doors for the third consecutive year to a workshop aiming to introduce children to ancient Greek civilization.

The “Become an Archaeologist for a Day” workshop is part of the annual European Children’s Festival under the auspices of the EU Delegation in the United States.

Dozens of children had the opportunity to learn about the civilization of Ancient Greece using Museum Kits, which were full of copies of Cycladic figurines, pottery works and educational material, courtesy of the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens.

Volunteers and postgraduate students in the U.S. assisted the children in learning how the reproductions were made and then in painting their own ancient Greek works of art.

The Museum of Cycladic Art sent the course materials to the U.S. capital in 2016 courtesy of a sponsorship by John and Eugenie Coumantaros. The museum reproductions have enriched the teaching of ancient Greek history in various schools in Washington, with the help of the Embassy’s free lending program.

The Greek Consulates General of Boston and Toronto (Canada), in collaboration with the Museum of Cycladic Art and with the help of sponsors the National Hellenic Society  and the Bodossaki Foundation, created their own lending programs for museums, schools and other institutions.
