Fasoula Aims to Take US Women’s Hoops by Storm

Greece’s Mariella Fasoula is the newest addition to Vanderbilt University’s womens basketball team for the upcoming season. The Boston College transfer, also known as “Fas,” is expected to be one of the best post players in the SEC, but that shouldn’t surprise anyone who knows her family background.

The 6-foot-5 junior is the daughter of the legendary former player Panagiotis Fasoulas, who is regarded as one of the greatest centers in European basketball history. Her father had been selected in the second round of the 1986 NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers, but decided to pursue his basketball ambitions in Europe.

He won many titles during his great career including a EuroLeague crown with Olympiacos in 1997 and the Eurobasket with the Greek national team in 1987. He was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2016.

His daughter is now following his footsteps with success, as she was included in the Lisa Leslie Award Watch List after leading Boston College with 16 points and 7.5 rebounds as a sophomore.

Could “Fas” be the female version of the “Greek Freak?” Only time will tell!
