The list of victims who have succumbed to the West Nile Virus in Greece continues to grow.
According to KEELPNO, the Hellenic Center for Disease Control & Prevention, the number of people who have succumbed to the West Nile Virus (WNV) has reached 44.
The number of reported cases has remained the same, however, numbering 312. This is attributed to a decline in the population of the mosquitoes carrying the virus.
The youngest of the victims was 63 years old, while the regions most affected by the outbreak are Attica and Central Macedonia.
The West Nile Virus is spread by mosquitoes, and 8 out of 10 people infected with the virus display few or no symptoms. In less than one per cent of cases though, the virus can cause encephalitis or meningitis, with life-threatening consequences.
