Water in Zakynthos' Famous 'Shipwreck Beach' Changes Color after Landslide (video)

A landslide caused by the recent earthquake which rocked the island of Zakynthos has resulted in the pristine turquoise waters of the island’s famous Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach turning white. This has occurred as a result of rocks which have fallen into the water as a result of the quake.
This observation was made following an on-site inspection performed by Efthymios Lekkas, professor of Geology and chairman of Greece’s Organization of Earthquake Planning and Protection (OASP).
The professor noted that the areas where the waters appear white are where rocks have fallen into the sea as a result of the landslides.
Lekkas proposed a series of interventions to protect both locals and tourists who visit the beach, which draws more than one million visitors every year.
Among the recommendations is the establishment of traffic zones on the beach surrounding the shipwreck, permitting visitors to only access areas of the beach proven to be safe.
Another suggestion is for tourists to not be permitted to swim on the beach, but only to disembark and visit the wreck in small groups before departing.
