Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, Theodore II, rededicated the renovated Greek Orthodox church of the Assumption of Mary (Koimisis tis Theotokou) in Alexandria, Egypt.
After chanting the Greek national anthem, Patriarch Theodore stated that “the African Church, instead of closing churches, reopens them, renovates and offers them to the glory of the Greek nation, which along with Egypt and Cyprus declare the friendship of our peoples.”
The renovated church is located alongside the first cemetery of the Greek community in Alexandria, where important figures of Greek history are buried, including the famous poet Constantine Cavafy.
Greece’s General Consul, Athanasios Kotsionis, said that with the blessings of Patriarch Theodore and the support of the Greek community, Egypt’s Hellenism will manage to endure these difficult times that the nation is currently experiencing.
The president of the Greek community in Egypt, Edmond Kassimatis, noted that the renovation of the 108-year-old church took place exclusively utilizing funds from the community’s budget. He thanked all those who played a crucial role in achieving this important accomplishment for the community.
