U.S. Neutral on Greek-Turkish Maritime Dispute

The United States has not taken any position on the recent dispute between Greece and Turkey regarding the issue of maritime borders.
Asked about the Turkish warnings that it would not tolerate any extension of Greece’s territorial waters, a State Department spokesman said that the American policy ”has not changed.”
”The two countries have the necessary diplomatic channels for addressing those kinds of issues,” stated the spokesman. “As a matter of principle the United States of America supports the sovereignty of Turkey and Greece.”
Greece recently stated plans to expand its maritime sovereignty towards the west from the Diapontia Islands, a cluster of small islands in the Ionian Sea, to Antikythera, an island located between the Peloponnese and Crete. Turkey has strongly reacted to this prospect.
