Greek Parliament to Decide on Extension of Territorial Waters

Greece’s Foreign Ministry

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, in his new dual role as Greece’s foreign minister, announced on Tuesday that Greece will determine when and how its territorial waters will be extended by way of a parliamentary vote instead of via presidential decree. These remarks followed a cabinet meeting which was held on Tuesday.
The meeting focused on how briefings and talks with other political parties will be conducted, before the issue comes before Parliament.
Tsipras decided that the experts council of the Greek foreign ministry should convene to weigh in on the issue.
According to ministry sources, Tsipras would like all parties to express their views before a national decision is reached.
Other topics of discussion at the cabinet meeting included Greek-Turkish relations in general; Tsipras’ preparations for a visit to Turkey following an invitation by its president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan; relations with Albania and the United States; and Tsipras’ upcoming visit to Russia.
