Tornado Strikes Cyprus, Causes Extensive Damage (video)

A powerful tornado swept through Cyprus on Sunday afternoon, causing extensive damage in the areas of Agios Trimithias and Paliometocho.
The tornado reached heights of 200 meters, causing extensive damage along its path, particularly in the area of Agios Trimithias. There were no reports of injuries, but electric lines were cut by falling trees and homes were badly damaged.
Interior Minister Constantinos Petrides visited the affected areas on Monday and assured the residents that restoration works will take place at the earliest possible time, in cooperation with other services.
Arrangements for temporary hotel accommodation were made by the civil defense authority for those who were unable to stay in their homes.
The interior ministry has begun recording and assessing the damage from the tornado, in order to determine financial and other forms of compensation.
