Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE Finalists to Compete for 7M in the Deep Seas of Kalamata (Video)

shell-ocean-discovery-xprize-greek-reporterThe $7 million Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE Finalists deep-sea competition is set to take place off the shores of Kalamata, Greece.
“We are excited to be bringing this XPRIZE to Greece, an amazing country with a long history of scientific and technological advancements that have benefited the world,” commented Jyotika Virmani, Ph.D., prize lead and senior director of XPRIZE’s Planet and Environment team.
“Having seen what the teams are proposing, if this competition is a success, there is no doubt in my mind that we will have made history by collectively changing this world and, within our lifetimes, be able to unveil what has been hidden since the start of human memory,” Dr Virmani says of the competition and innovators participating in it.
The three-year global competition will complete with a grand prize, as teams compete to launch and recover their autonomous machines from XPRIZE’s Mission Control in Kalamata.
The real-world testing is the final stage of the contest, and will take place starting in November running through December, where the teams are expected to complete mapping of at least 250 kilometers of the total 500 kilometers where the competition is taking place on the ocean seafloor at depths of some 4,000 meters. They are expected to push their underwater technologies to their limits to complete the mapping — and have to do it all within a 24-hour window.
Dr Virmani further explained that the “The Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE competing teams are creating breakthrough technologies designed to operate in extreme conditions, with the goal of rapidly mapping an area that has not previously been mapped at such high-resolution; we are providing the teams with an environment that is full of mystery and geological features that will offer a true test of their technologies.”
Panagiotis Nikas, the mayor of Kalamata was quite excited to be hosting this prestigious competition in Kalamata. “The waters surrounding Kalamata provide teams in the Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE with a unique and varied underwater landscape for exploration, and we look forward to supporting their work in this important final round of real-world testing.”
The grand prize will be delegated according to which team is able to render the top scores for demonstrating the highest resolution seafloor mapping. Further honoring the winning team’s hard work, the high-resolution seafloor map will then be given to NCSR-Demokritos, the largest research center in Greece and their Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics, to be used as part of a worldwide scientific collaboration that aims to establish a new generation Neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean.
The non-profit XPRIZE is a company known as a global leader in creating world-changing incentive competitions, and encouraging crowds to take action.
