Signs of Crisis between Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and Archbishop of Greece Ieronymos

The cancellation of a scheduled meeting on Friday in Athens between Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Ieronymos indicates that there is a rift between the two Church leaders.
Church of Greece officials said the meeting was canceled due to Ieronymos‘ work obligations ahead of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece on Friday and the scheduled election of the new Metropolitan of Larissa on the same day.
However, Church of Greece circles speak of an acrimonious dispute between the two Church leaders over Agios Georgios church built at the Prombonas estate in Athens.
The church was built inside the estate at the request of physician D. Propbonas, as stated in his will. The Constantinople Patriarchate with a notarial deed of donation took possession of the temple. However, at the end of October 2017 the Greek Archdiocese filed a lawsuit in an Athens court against Archbishop Bartholomew and the Prombonas Legacy Committee.
The fact that the two Church leaders did not meet at all while Bartolomew was in Athens indicates that the legal dispute over the Prombonas estate is more serious than expected.
Bartholomew was in Athens on Friday where he held a service for the victims of the East Attica fires in July. The service was attended by the mayors of Rafina and Marathon, Evangelos Bournous and Ilias Psinakis, as well as relatives of the victims.
