Low Turnout in FYROM Referendum

The turnout in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia referendum on the country’s name change has been low six hours before polls close, an Associated Press report says.
According to AP, a FYROM official said that turnout in the polls stood at 16 percent six hours before the polls close.
At least 50 percent plus one of the registered voters need to cast a ballot in order for the results to be valid.
FYROM residents are voting on whether to accept a deal signed with Greece in June under which they will change their country’s name to the Republic of North Macedonia in order to join NATO and the EU.
Opponents of the name deal with Greece, including President Gjorge Ivanov, have called on citizens to boycott the vote.
