PM Tsipras in New York Adresses UN General Assembly

“Nelson Mandela was a relentless fighter for independence, peace and human rights,” Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Monday, addressing world leaders in New York.

The Greek prime minister spoke at the Nelson Mandela Peace Conference during theĀ 73rd United Nations General Assembly in New York.

In his speech about Mandela, Tsipras spoke about the Greek government’s achievements in the past four years. Namely, he said that Greece is out of the austerity bailout program, the Greek government is protecting the rights of migrants and minorities, managed the refugee influx with respect to human rights and resolved the issue of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia name.

The Greek premier said that Mandela’s vision is more relevant today, as the world is facing new wars and conflicts, the widening of social inequalities, a strengthening of racism and a rise of religious fundamentalism.

Tsipras will give another speech on Friday, this time to address the UN General Assembly plenary.

On Tuesday, the Greek prime minister will meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the general assembly. The two leaders will discuss bilateral relations between the two neighbors, the Cyprus issue, regional issues and the migrant and refugee inflow, according to the Athens – Macedonian News Agency (AMNA).

The Greek premier will be in New York for five days with the following schedule, according to AMNA:

On Tuesday at 08:00, Tsipras will be at the Welcome of the Heads of State and Government by the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

At 09:00 he will be at the Opening of the General Discussion of the 73rd General Assembly of the United Nations on “Making the Global Partnership Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Peaceful, Equitable and Sustainable Societies”.

At 11:30 he will have a bilateral meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayipp Erdogan.

At midnight the prime minister will speak at Concordia.

On Wednesday at 8:30, Tsipras has a meeting with Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

At 10:30 he will meet with Morgan Stanley executives.

On Thursday at 17:50 Tsipras will be meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres

At 19:30 he will be at the Global Hope Coalitionā€™s Annual Dinner, where the Greek Prime Minister will be awarded for the country’s handling of the refugee crisis

On Friday at 12:30 Tsipras will give a speech toĀ the United Nations General Assembly plenary.
