Multicultural Museums Victoria Receives Museums Australia Award for ‘Grandmothers’ Exhibition’

Multicultural Museums Victoria Received the Museums Australia Award for Grandmothers exhibition, with a Greek-Australian installation called ‘Yiayia’.

Multicultural Museums Victoria, is a new coalition of the Hellenic Museum Melbourne and the Chinese, Islamic, Jewish and Italian Museums.

Grandmothers is the inaugural joint project for Multicultural Museums Victoria and won the award.

The five museums delivered an impressive exhibition, each honoring the legacy of migrant grandmothers in Australia, which included the a multicultural cook-off, community workshops, live music and curators talks.

“Yiayia”, which means “grandmother” in the Greek language, was the Greek installation of the exhibition. Grandmothers were portrayed in all ages of their lives.

The exhibition was a tribute to the loving women who, as custodians of culture and tradition, pass on their knowledge, culture and history from generation to generation.

Through portraits and artworks, recipes and flavors, astonishing tales, traditional objects, ‘Yiayia’ had the Greek grandmother at the forefront of family and community history.
