Public Prosecutor Investigating Greek Fires

The Athens Prosecutor’s Office is continuing to investigate the East Attica fires of July 23 that caused the death of at least 91 people, left dozens injured and hundreds of properties destroyed.
Witnesses and victims of the fires continue to testify to the public prosecutor. The office is determining criminal responsibility for the deadly impact of the blazes.
By the end of next week the prosecutor and experts are expected to know the content of telephone conversations between the officials involved to draw useful conclusions for possible negligence.
The prosecution authorities’ first hearing took place on Friday and reportedly lasted more than six hours. The prosecution is not only investigating the causes of the fires but also town planning breaches that prevented dozens of people from fleeing the flames and finding the sea.
New information reported on Tuesday claims that during the crucial hours between the afternoon and evening of July 23 — the time the fatal fires broke out at Mati — police could not communicate with the Fire Department’s emergency center.
The report states police officials complained they were calling five different lines to the Fire Department emergency center but no-one would answer the phones. As a result, police only got information on the fires from officers who at the scene.
