Pollution Warning Issued over Greek Fires

People returning to their homes devastated by last month’s Greek fires, are being urged to wear masks and gloves for fear of pollution unleashed by the blazes.
In comments to Greek newspaper Kathimerini, Dimosthenis Sarigiannis, professor of environmental engineering at Thessaloniki’s Aristotle University, said visits to the affected areas should be kept short.
He also warned those volunteering in the clean-up to exercise caution.
“Cars were burned, gas tanks exploded, fuel was ignited and homes, construction material, plastics torched,” he was quoted as saying.
It is feared this mix of toxic chemicals, let loose by the intense heat, could have poisoned the environment in places like Mati, Rafina and Neos Voutzas.
Refuse from the site should also be disposed of by the authorities, as it may be carrying pollutants and is dangerous to the public.
The news comes as Greek PM Alexis Tsipras said on Tuesday that 3,200 illegally built structures would be torn down as part of an effort to end the “chaos” of unregulated building.
