Greek police have smashed a criminal gang that was selling infants, arresting a 40-year-old woman trying to sell a four-day-old infant to officers acting as a couple.
The undercover Chalkida officers were introduced to the ring and arranged an appointment to buy a newborn baby.
They met in an Attica location with a 40-year-old woman acting as the gang’s intermediary. They agreed to buy an infant for €18,000 ($20,600).
The woman led the officers to an apartment in another Attica location. Police raided the apartment and arrested the woman and another eight people who were there.
Five other women aged 29, 35, 34, 28 and 29 were arrested, along with three men aged 39, 41 and 32. All of those detained are foreigners and each had a distinct role in the ring.
More specifically, the 39-year-old man was the leader of the ring. He had been arrested before for similar offenses.
The 41-year-old and the 32-year-old males were in charge of supervising the women who were in the apartment. The 35-year-old woman acted as the right hand to the leader.
The 40-year-old woman had the role of the intermediary, while the other four women — one of whom had with her the newborn infant to be sold — were responsible for bearing children in order to sell their newborns to potential buyers.
An investigation at a public hospital showed that three of the women who were arrested had recently given birth, while the 34-year-old is pregnant.
Police seized a total of €9,025 along with 10 cellphones used for the ring’s criminal activities.
All persons arrested were brought to the Prosecutor’s Office in Athens, while an investigation by the Chalkida Police Department is in progress to find the range of the ring’s criminal activities.
