More Flash Flooding in Central Greece as the Spercheios River Overflows

On Friday the two villages of Styrfaka and Lygaria near Lamia in Central Greece, experienced flash flooding when heavy rains with a long duration in the area caused the Spercheios river to overflow.
Over the last two weeks the area has had to deal with flash flooding due to heavy downpours.
The state news television station, ERT, showed footage of the river sweeping through the village.
Locals tried to protect themselves and their homes from the water and dangerous debris such as downed trees that moved swiftly between houses and warehouses, in the muddy waters.
The residents of Styrfaka claim that construction on the new railway line being developed near the edge of the village was to blame for much of the rocks and other debris in the flood.
There were no reports of injuries resulting from the floods.
The traffic on the National Highway at the entrance of Lianokladio was interrupted for a long time and officials are advising travelers to avoid the area if possible.
