Minister Vows to Demolish Illegal Buildings in Fire-Stricken Greece

“All building permits in Mati will be checked. We will tear down buildings wherever it is needed,” stated Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Spirtzis on Friday.
Spirtzis made the statement in the aftermath of the deadly fires that literally obliterated the seaside town of Mati, where over 85 people lost their lives. Speaking on ANT1 television, the minister noted that many of the buildings were in violation to zoning laws.
The minister partly blamed the poor planning of the seaside town where cars and pedestrians have no easy access to the beach or the main highway.
“Twenty-six fellow citizens burned to death because there was a wall in Mati blocking their way to the beach. Wherever it is needed, we will tear constructions down. It is certain that it will be needed.”
Spirtzis said that it is imperative for all towns to have proper planning and zoning.
