Cypriot Reporters Say 'Glossary' Endangers Freedom of Speech

A document backed by the OSCE which attempted to defuse some of the political language confronting journalists in Cyprus has been rejected by Greek-Cypriot reporters.
The Words That Matter: A Glossary for Journalism in Cyprus had been produced earlier this week as part of a dialogue project between reporters north and south of the divided island.
It was billed as an attempt to codify recommendations for reporting on sensitive issues in Cyprus.
However, in a statement reported by Greek newspaper Kathimerini, the Cyprus Journalists Union said the document would have the effect of curtailing freedom of speech.
The country’s president, Nicos Anastasiades, also rebuffed the glossary.
Although many said they respected the good intentions behind the tri-lingual publication — which saw a Turkish Cypriot reporter receive threats — the attempt to defuse politically loaded language was rejected.
