Greek Government Postpones Again Issue of Diaspora Vote

Opposition party New Democracy has a proposal to allow for Greeks living abroad to vote in national elections. However, the SYRIZA led government has once again declined to legislate on the proposal.
Interior Minister Panos Skourletis postponed the issue saying that a committee will discuss the matter in six months. The opposition had proposed that an amendment that would allow Greeks in the diaspora to vote in national elections should be included in the new draft bill on the changes of electoral districts in Attica and changes in local government elections.
The main opposition party has filed proposals for the diaspora vote twice over the past year.
In parliament on Friday, ND leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis addressed Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, House Speaker Nikos Voutsis and the minister of the interior, without, however, getting a reply why the issue is not being discussed now.
“Mr Tsipras, are we going to vote together in favor of Greeks abroad voting in these elections? Yes? Do you shake your head as a yes or a no? Or you refuse to answer? Or you pretend you don’t hear me? You probably pretend you don’t hear. I ask some hard questions, I know,” Mitsotakis said, commenting on the prime minister’s refusal to touch on the issue.
“I don’t know why you avoid this issue so systematically, you and Mr. Voutsis – for the vote of the Greeks abroad. What worries you about this issue, at last? Why is it so hard to agree?” the New Democracy chief added.
