Nightmare Returns as Floods Hit Greek Town of Mandra (photos, video)

The town of Mandra, west of Athens, where 24 people lost their lives last November during torrential rains and extreme flooding, was hard hit again.
No loss of life was reported but numerous residents posted videos on Facebook that showed the force of the water that transformed streets into raging rivers.

Firemen had to intervene to free drivers trapped in their cars and responded to dozens of calls by residents whose basements were flooded.

Some cars were swept away

About 2,000 homes and businesses were destroyed in Mandra last November in what experts described as “a disaster waiting to happen”, due to poorly conceived development plans. Substantial upgrades to the drainage system were approved in 2016, but work still has not begun.
Flooding also hit other parts of Greece on Tuesday as a weather front Greece is hit with rainfall exceeding 50 millimeters in many parts of the country.
The rain was also heavy in the prefecture of Magnesia, central Greece, where there were reports of serious flooding.
In the area of Kanalia, streams broke their banks and flooded around 30 homes while local roads were submerged.
There was widespread flooding in Larissa too. Deputy Mayor Vassilis Letsios told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency that coastal roads were particularly badly affected, noting that municipal vehicles had been dispatched to contain the flooding and open up outlets to reduce the volume of water.
