Police Arrest Greek Lawmaker Wanted on Treason Charges

Konstantinos Barbarousis

Greek police have arrested a member of parliament wanted for treason after he fled Athens on Friday in a high-speed dash across the country.
Konstantinos Barbarousis, who has been ousted from his ultra-right Golden Dawn party, offered no resistance as anti-terror officers encircled a house in Penteli, north of the Greek capital on Monday.
Police sources say he had been hiding in a friend’s house for the last 24 hours, after evading a blockade late on Friday in the western region of Aetoloakarnania.
Barbarousis landed in hot water after an outburst in parliament on Friday when he called for the arrest of the country’s prime minister and president over the provisional ‘Macedonia’ name deal.
Effectively calling for a coup d’etat, he demanded the Greek armed forces “abide by their oath” and arrest Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, Defense Minister Panos Kammenos and President Prokopis Pavlopoulos.
Greece’s judicial authorities do not need parliament’s approval to lift an lawmaker’s immunity from prosecution in the case of treason-related charges.
