2018 Los Angeles Greek Film Festival Ends With Orpheus Awards Ceremony

Los Angeles Greek Film Festival

The 2018 Los Angeles Greek Film Festival held its closing night event on June 10, handing out Orpheus Awards to the best films and actors of the festival.

This marked the 12th year for the festival, which screens most of its films at the Egyptian Theatre. After a week of seminars, panels and films, LAGFF screened “Perfect Strangers” to close out the festival, handed out this year’s Orpheus Awards, and then held a light dinner reception and after party with a special musical performance by Live Greek Rebetiko Trio.

Stand-up comedian Anthony Steven Kalloniatis (ANT) opened the awards ceremony, and Chuck Dukas served as MC for the evening.

An honorary Orpheus award was given to George Chakiris, the Greek-American actor who won best supporting actor for “West Side Story”. Rita Moreno, his famous co-star from the movie, presented Chakiris with the award. The theme of the night was Academy of Greeks, as the festival paid tribute to Greeks in the film industry who have been nominated for or won Academy Awards since 1935. Elia Kazan, Costa-Gavras, Dean Tavoularis, Vangelis, George Miller, Alexander Payne, Olympia Doukakis and Alexandre Desplat were among those honored during the evening.

“Polyxeni”, by Dora Masclavanou, a movie about an orphan girl from Istanbul, won the award for best fiction feature film. Lead actress Katia Goulioni won for best performance.

The best feature direction award was given to Thodoris Atheridis for “Perfect Strangers”. “Dolphin Man”, a documentary by Lefteris Charitos about free diver Jacques Mayol, won for best documentary.

An honorable mention was also given to “Golden Dawn Girls”, a documentary that pries into the disturbing politics and behind the scenes reality of the Greek Golden Dawn party.

Tassos Boulmetis won a special jury award for “1968”, while the film won the audience award for best documentary. “The Last Note” won the audience award for Best Feature. Lastly, “Goldfish” by Yorgos Angelopoulos won for best short.
