“The Greek government is waiting for Mr. Zoran Zaev to take the decisive step towards reaching an agreement. The ball is in their own court,” an official spokesman has said.
Speaking on Kontra television on Sunday, Dimitris Tzanakopoulos was referring to the stalemate hanging over the naming issue negotiations between Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
“Last Sunday in Brussels, there was a successful meeting of the foreign ministers of the two countries in which they reached the general outline of the agreement,” Tzanakopoulos, the government’s spokesman, said.
“The case is currently in the hands of the two prime ministers, but what we are waiting for is for the Skopje political leadership to take the decisive step so that we can finally move towards a mutually acceptable solution.
“Mr. Zaev must complete the necessary political actions within his country, and this is what we expect,” he added.
Speaking about last week’s statements from both sides that the nomenclature issue is very close to a solution, Tzanakopoulos said: “Nothing has been agreed until everything is agreed. We are currently expecting the FYROM leadership to take the decisive step and accept the deal.”
“Of course, during the technical negotiations, everything that is agreed is in writing. What we expect is the communication between the two prime ministers, which at the moment we cannot say when it will take place,” he added.
Regarding Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias and his talks with FYROM counterpart Nikola Dimitrov, Tzanakopoulos said:
“Mr. Kotzias communicates daily with the prime minister. The foreign minister has done a very difficult and tedious job for more than four months and the previous Sunday along with the FYROM foreign minister they managed to reach a technical agreement in the first place.
“From then on, the issue of political decisions concerns the prime ministers. Mr. Kotzias has rightly said that, as far as the discussions between the foreign ministers are concerned, they are completed.”
