Greece faces widespread disruption on May 30 as a range of labor unions announce a 24-hour strike.
The General Confederation of Greek Labor, which represents over 80 individual unions, will instruct its members to strike. They will be joined by public-sector staff represented by the ADEDY union as well members of the Panhellenic Seamen’s Union (PNO).
Greek seamen have been engaged in months of stoppages over what they say are unacceptable changes to how the industry is run.
Activists say the action is being called in protest against austerity measures imposed on the Greek people.
ADEDY is also boycotting the evaluation of staff working for the state.
In order to avoid last year’s failed attempt to evaluate public sector and municipality employees, the Ministry of Administrative Reconstruction has proceeded with the creation of an electronic civil-servant register.
Last year, there were no municipal evaluations and only 70 percent of employees working in ministries were scrutinized. According to ADEDY, the ultimate goal of the evaluations is the firing of some employees.
