Members of a Greek-American fraternity have been in Greece for a series of high-level meetings following a fact-finding trip to Cyprus.
The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), founded in 1922 “in response to the evils of bigotry and racism that emerged in early 20th century American society”, completed visits to Ikaria, Greece, and to the Republic of Cyprus this past week.
In Cyprus, the AHEPA delegation met Foreign Minister Nicos Christodoulides, Presidential Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Overseas Cypriots Photis Photiou and National Guard Chief Lieutenant General Ilias Leontaris.
They discussed U.S.-Cyprus relations, energy exploration in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone, the status of the resumption of settlement talks and humanitarian issues.
On the Aegean island of Ikaria, the delegation met with the administration of the Prefectural General Hospital, located in Agios Kirikos. Through AHEPA’s public health assistance to Greece campaign, the fraternity has been able to team-up with partners to provide millions of dollars in aid to help address the medical supply shortage in Greece.
Before coming to Greece and Cyprus, the delegation also visited the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Theological School of Halki in Istanbul. There, the AHEPA family presented His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew with a $20,000 donation and Metropolitan Elpidophoros, dean of the Theological School of Halki, with a $5,000 donation.
