A meeting that took place in Chania, Crete addressed the extensive drοught the island is suffering from and expressed concern over the lack of water in the summer season.
The head of the Department of Water of the Decentralized Administration of Crete, Marinos Kritsotakis, said that “with proper management there will be no particular problems”.
In the meeting it was stressed that there should be an operational management plan and apply preventive measures, based on data sent from the end of February to all the island’s agencies related to water management.
On the basis of the data presented during the meeting by Kritsotakis, since September 2017 up until now, in Crete 3.8 billion cubic meters of rainwater fell on the island.
The last draught season was 1989-1990, when 4.1 billion cubic meters of water fell on Crete. In 2003, a season considered particularly wet, pertinent authorities measured 12 billion cubic meters of rainwater falling on the island. The average annual rainfall value in the island over the last 40 years was 7.6 billion cubic meters of water.
In order to address the situation, and in order to avoid problems in the summer season, preventive measures are proposed, such as: Accelerating hydraulic works, monitoring networks, locating leaks, searching for alternative water supplies, reducing waste, informing users control of groundwater and surface water levels and the reduction of cultivations that require a lot of water.
