A fight broke out at a church of a small village of Messinia, southern Peloponnese, over the rights of an icon of St. George.
As the village of Dorion celebrated its patron St. George on Monday with a liturgy in the local church, representatives of the local association turned up to take the icon for the traditional procession through the village.
Comical and totally unholy scenes followed as the priest’s wife decided; for unknown reasons, that the icon should not leave the church.
«Over my dead body» she was heard shouting as she grabbed the icon and returned it inside the church.
Local sites report that the police was forced to intervene to calm the situation.
Later on in the day, a truce was called as the priest and his wife joined the rest of the village for the traditional song and dance of St. George’s day.
