Greece, Turkey in 'Undeclared War' in the Aegean

Deputy Defense Minister Fotis Kouvelis (third left).

Greece’s Deputy Defense Minister said that Greece and Turkey are in an “undeclared war” in the Aegean following the claims by Ankara that its forces removed a Greek flag from an islet.
Speaking to Greek state radio on Monday evening, Fotis Kouvelis denied earlier comments by Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim about a Greek flag being taken down by the Turkish Coast Guard.
In a follow-on interview Kouvelis said that Greek radars did not pick up any suspicious Turkish activity.
“There has been no incident of the Turkish coastguard or special forces taking down the Greek flag,” he noted.
He added that he was briefed continuously by the armed forces.
The Greek minister also warned about the danger of an accident in the Aegean.
A mission to prevent violation of our borders can end in a “hot incident”, he said and added that the danger is more acute in the air than the sea.
