Greek Town Prepares for Funeral of Fallen Pilot

The funeral of Giorgos Baltadoros, the Greek fighter pilot who died on Thursday when his Mirage 2000-5 plane crashed in the Aegean, will take place today in central Greece.
The 34-year-old father of two was originally from Morfovouni, a picturesque village near Karditsa town, Thessaly.
Baltadoros was born and raised in the village, where his parents and brother still live. He finished high school in Karditsa before he joined the Hellenic Air Force.
He was serving in 331 Squadron based at the Tanagra air base, about 40 kilometers (26 miles) north of the Greek capital.
On Thursday, he was ordered to confront Turkish planes that had violated Greek airspace.
There was no engagement, as the Turkish planes left Greek airspace before Baltadoros’ Mirage 2000-5 reached the area.
However, his plane crashed in the sea as he was approaching Skyros air base for landing.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
