Greek police have arrested seven women for working illegally as nurses in two hospitals in the Attica region.
In a statement, police said they detained the “exclusive nurses” in an operation by the Attica Aliens Directorate on Thursday.
Among those detained were nationals from Albania and Georgia who were apparently employed without having the right qualifications or diplomas necessary to operate in a Greek hospital.
The suspects were also not enrolled in the hospitals’ paperwork.
Prosecutors are now examining the cases, with the police saying such fraudulent employment “results in the deprivation of income from the State and the Insurance Funds since the required receipts of services are not issued, while the insurance contributions provided by the law are not paid”.
Undeclared income and black-market labor are significant issues in Greece. In 2016 the Hellenic Confederation of Professionals, Craftsmen and Merchants (GSEVEE) warned that there was a rising trend in undeclared work, estimating that black-market labor may be at 35-40 percent of Greek GDP.
In February this year, the New York Times reported that unpaid taxes in Greece had gone up to €95 billion ($117 billion), up from €76 billion in 2016.
