Greece’s Super League is facing even more turmoil as reports suggest top-flight Athenian club Panathinaikos’ players have downed tools in a strike over salaries.
Although the struggling side is expected to play their league game against Atromitos on Sunday, it is languishing at ninth place in the league and was recently docked three points for failing to clear debts to a former player.
According to a BBC Sport story, the club management has insisted the players will be paid on Thursday this week, after having not received any wages in 2018 so far.
Greek football has been dogged by controversy this year already. Greek football’s senior league and cup competitions were suspended on March 12 by the government following scenes of PAOK owner Ivan Savvidis entering the pitch with a firearm during a fraught top-of-the-table clash against AEK.
On March 29, a FIFA representative visiting Greece after a series of violent incidents in football games recommended the country be suspended from the sport’s governing body.
In a letter leaked to the Greek press Huebel also cites a long delay in court cases, the widespread belief that the championship will be decided in the courtrooms and the inadequate response of the Greek soccer federation, the EPO.
“The current situation does not allow EPO to guarantee the smooth running of the national competitions,” he wrote.
