Turkish Jet Flies Over Greek Island as War of Words Escalates

A Turkish F-16 fighter jet flew over the Greek island of Farmakonisi on Tuesday as Greece and Turkey escalate their verbal offensive against each other.
According to the Greek defense sources the Turkish jet violated Greek airspace at 10.55 a.m. local time (08:55 GMT) over the Dodecanese and flew at low altitude over the Greek island.
The plane, according to the same sources, was flying inside Greece for about five minutes and at its lowest point of descent was only 3,200 feet over Farmakonisi.
The incident is seen as another provocation by Ankara at a time when harsh words are being exchanged between the two NATO allies.
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is chairing a cabinet meeting on the escalating crisis with Turkey on Tuesday.
On Monday, Greece’s defense minister Panos Kammenos described Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan as being “mad”.
He also said that the detainment of the two Greek junior army officers in Turkey may last for 15 years.
In a statement on Sunday, the prime minister’s office branded Erdogan a “sultan”.  Turkey’s foreign ministry called the statement ‘irresponsible’.
