Greek Church Devastated by Pre-Easter Blaze

The Greek community in South Australia is rallying round after a fire swept through an Orthodox church just days before Easter.

St Panteleimon Greek Orthodox Church at Glenelg North, Adelaide, which has been serving the community since 1981, caught fire on Tuesday afternoon.

Despite the best efforts of fire crews, the building was extensively damaged. The cause of the fire remains unknown for now.

Parishioners have been left distraught, with the blaze coming on Holy Week, meaning the church will be unable to open for traditional services.

However, according to one Australian media report, relics stored in the church’s altar remained unscathed by the fire.

Parish president Nick Kapolos told ABC about the “miraculous” survival of the partial remains of St Panteleimon contained in a gold-plated box.

It is also reported that a Catholic church in Glenelg has offered space to the Orthodox community to use their premises for Easter celebrations.
