A troupe of Shaolin monks is bringing traditional Chinese kung fu to Greece, exhibiting their amazing skills in a series of performances in Athens.
They are touring as part of an act called Shaolin: The Legend, and are in Greece as part of a year-long cultural exchange with China.
Audiences are being treated to almost superhuman feats of endurance and skill, with backflips, somersaults, flying kicks, spear-tip balancing and performances with weapons.
These monks, who first visited Greece in 2011, will also perform Sunday at the taekwondo venue at the north Athens site of the 2004 Olympic Games.
Organizers say the Buddhist monk Bodhidarma, who arrived to China from India, is considered the founder of Shaolins’ martial art.
“He established a system of physical and spiritual discipline, which later transformed into the various types of martial arts that prevail in the East,” they added.
Shaolin-style kung fu combines Zen Buddhism with fighting skills and was developed in the Shaolin temple in Henan province, during its 1500-year history.
