The “barbaric custom” of roasting a lamb on the spit at Easter should stop, famous Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis has said.
Theodorakis, a high-profile figure in Greece and abroad, was writing on his blog about animal cruelty after video emerged of two soldiers tormenting a dog in Epirus and Greek lawmakers also dropped a controversial bill on neutering pets and strays.
Speaking out against animal abuse he wrote: “Easter is coming again. The days of the massacre of innocent animals are approaching for the sake of a barbaric [feast] that ought to have vanished long ago.”
He also hit out at animal cruelty, writing: “Every day we are reading more and more cases of animal abuse, horrendous incidents that ‘normally’ would never happen but we see that they the acts are committed by people and – many times – by young people.
“What does this say about our society? What else other than general decay in all aspects!”
Theodorakis, 93, is regarded as a guru of left-wing politics in Greece, and has also been an outspoken critic of the Greek government’s attempts to solve the chronic dispute with FYROM by accepting a compound name that includes ‘Macedonia’.
